Stafford Technical Center (located in Rutland, Vermont) provides technical education to area high schools and adults. At Stafford, a center accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges, students from high schools in Rutland County (Rutland, Fair Haven, Otter Valley, Proctor, Poultney, West Rutland, Mill River, and Mount Saint Joseph) may choose from 17 different all day, technical programs, many of which have articulated agreements with colleges and universities allowing students to earn college credits. All daytime programs are available to adults in Rutland County who do not have a high school diploma and are also available to adults with diplomas on a space available basis. Typically, adults choose to enroll in evening classes, and there are a wide variety of evening course offerings available.
Stafford Technical Center has been providing technical education since 1974. Although many things changed in technical education and the programs that we offer, we continually strive to meet the changing needs of our regional economy. Students come from a wide variety of backgrounds with personal goals ranging from attending college to securing immediate employment or an apprenticeship.
Students who are interested in attending a full-day technical program take part in an application process in the spring. They are selected on the basis of their visit to Stafford, their academic record, attendance, history, grade level, credit status for graduation, interest in the program as a career option and potential for success in the career field. When students are accepted, they also continue to be enrolled in their home high schools and have the option of participating (at their home schools) in athletics and other extracurricular events and activities. Stafford programs provide students with the opportunity to earn high school credits, college credits, and industry certifications. Academic course work is available to all students during the day. College preparatory classes are offered in addition to classes that support students who intend to enter to workforce immediately upon graduation.
