The Rutland Region is renowned for its recreational opportunities.  State forests and parks and 56,000 acres of National Forest land abound. The “Long Trail” passes within 10 miles of the city, doubling along the ridge of the Green Mountains and passing Killington and Pico Peaks. The Appalachian Trail also comes within a few miles of the city limits.

Killington Resort, the largest ski and snowboard resort in the eastern United States, features the most diverse terrain, an expansive lift network, the most extensive snowmaking system in the world and numerous off-mountain activities. Stretching across seven mountain areas, including Pico Mountain, Killington Resort features access to 200 trails and 32 lifts with one lift ticket, plus the highest lift-served terrain in Vermont from the 4,241-foot summit of Killington Peak via the K-1 Express Gondola.  The adventures continue during the summer months with Alpine Slides, lift-served mountain biking and hiking via the K-1 Gondola on 50+ miles of trails. Killington championship 18-hole par-72 golf course featuring mountain views, elevation variation, inviting fairways and wide-open welcoming greens.

Summer recreation is geared to our many lakes with sailing, swimming, waterskiing, canoeing, fishing, camping and picnicking. Golf courses and tennis courts dot the area and hiking, hunting, horseback riding, rodeos, stock car racing, mountain biking and bicycle touring are all popular activities as well. Virtually every town offers a local recreation area with a variety of facilities and programs, many organized for children.

The City of Rutland’s Parks and Recreation Department runs a comprehensive recreation program year-round and operates parks, ball fields and a municipal swimming pool. It presents a series of concerts in Main Street Park on Sunday and Wednesday evenings in the summer as well as special programs for adults and children.
